A TALE of TWO SISTERS
When producer and talent manager NICOLE MACNAUGHTON was suddenly diagnosed with Type I Diabetes (T1D), she and her sister and producing partner KIMBERLY DANEK PINKSON knew they had to turn the moment into something positive that could help others living with the disease.
With MY TYPE and the affiliated impact campaign, the sisters are on a mission to:
-
Raise awareness about T1D, a chronic autoimmune disease in which the pancreas makes little or no insulin. It is not the same as Type II, which can be changed with diet and exercise.
-
Amplify the drive for early detection.
-
Increase support for research and treatment.
-
Encourage the drive toward a cure.
THEN THEY MET.....
Zach White & Elise Scalfani
Zach was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 5; Elise Scalfani at 14. Now thriving young professionals, their resilience and compassion have been shaped by life with T1D.
Several years ago, Zach slid into Elise’s DMs in a T1D chat room with a flirty pun: “I think you’re my type.” OMNIPOD pitched the story to PEOPLE magazine and they ran with it.
Zach’s dad Matt showed the story to his childhood friends, yup, you guessed it, sisters and producers Nicole MacNaughton and Kimberly Danek Pinkson—and the idea for My Type, the film, was born.

Why This Film Matters
Dr. Swati Elchuri
“Early detection lessens the stress of an unexpected diagnosis, supports better long-term outcomes, and reduces the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) - a serious and sometimes life-threatening complication that often occurs at diagnosis when T1D goes unrecognized."
Zach White
“Managing T1D takes courage and that courage can shape incredible lives and love stories.
If even one person feels seen and less alone after watching My Type, that's everything to me.”
Dr. Kristin Castorino
"As we move toward seeing the whole person in healthcare, especially those living with diabetes, storytelling becomes a powerful tool. By showing real people living fully—with T1D as part of the story, not the whole story—we help a new generation see what it means to thrive, not just survive."
